The framework

What this Atlas is.

Every PE-backed lower-middle-market company has an operating model that decomposes into twelve automation functions. Each function scores 0-5. The composite places the company on a four-tier maturity ladder.

22 Archetypes

Operating-model categories.

Every LMM PE-backed business compresses into one of 22 operating models. A vertical SaaS company at $25M ARR and a 30-location dental support organization run nothing alike. The taxonomy explains why.

12 Functions

The 0-5 score.

Every business has the same twelve functions: lead generation, sales qualification, onboarding, fulfillment, account management, customer support, billing, collections, reporting, compliance, hiring, training. The composite is the Automation Index.

4 Maturity Tiers

Where the Index lands.

Foundational below 1.25 (manual by default). Developing 1.25-2.45 (tooled but not orchestrated). Optimized 2.45-3.75 (system-driven). Exit-Grade 3.75+ (AI-native).

Exit-Grade portraits

Only five companies reach Exit-Grade.

Of 4,838 coded companies, five reach Exit-Grade (composite at or above 3.75). All five are software businesses. None operates in services, manufacturing, distribution, or retail. The structural reading: in May 2026, Exit-Grade is a SaaS-only category.
